Lauren's 12 month checkup

I took Lauren for her 12 month checkup yesterday. She was 30.25 inches long (tall?) and weighed in at 21 pounds. Apparently that puts her in the 50th percentile for her weight and the 90th for her height (nothing has changed there!) Dr. Saji said she was healthy and doing fine. She had to have 4 shots :( and the more I am thinking about all of this shot stuff, the more I am thinking that maybe I should be more informed about these vaccinations.

Don't get me wrong, I really feel that the vaccinations are safer than the risk of her contracting some of these diseases, but on the other hand, I think a lot of them are unnecessary and it's ridiculous how many they give these little babies at once. On that note, I have found an interesting web site that I thought I would share. http://www.nvic.org/ It's worth checking out if you have time! With that being said, we plan to continue Lauren on the "normal" vaccination schedule. However, if we have any more children, I am thinking about some alternate ideas.

Anyway, back to Lauren....she has taken her first steps in the past week and walked around and around the exam room several times while we were waiting for the doctor to come in. I think she still realizes that crawling is faster, and safer.

She also has cut her first tooth. Well, it's like 1/2 a tooth right now. And it's the upper left incisor (I think that's the correct name) Kelli pointed out that if she gets one in the same place on the other side, she'll be a chipmunk! She's never done anything by the book, so why should she get her teeth in the correct order? Ha!

She also HATES milk. We have successfully weaned from breastfeeding, but she refuses to drink milk from a cup. I have tried it all- mixing in flavored syrup, sugar, warming the milk...she won't drink more than a sip (and then when she realizes what it is...forget about it!)

I talked to the doctor and he didn't seem concerned. He told me to keep trying and if I could get her to drink 8-10 ounces of milk a day, he said she should be fine. He's obviously not worried (like me!) about her becoming dehydrated, she drinks juice and water from a cup. But her diapers aren't wet if I don't offer something besides milk! We are still supplementing her with a nighttime bottle until we figure out what to do. Any suggestions? Are there other babies in the world who don't drink milk?

I have thought about doing a "milk or nothing" approach...but it seems so harsh. Hmmm...

At 12 months Lauren is a good eater! She likes pretty much anything you put in front of her, as long as she can feed it to herself. Tonight for dinner, I gave her a cheese sandwhich, green beans, strawberries and grapes (Keep in mind, she only has 1/2 a tooth!) She ate all the green beans and fruit, none of the cheese sandwhich! She's very unpredictable. :)
My in-laws seem to think it's funny to watch her eat, because they said she has a "smorgasbord" or "buffet" in front of her, because I try to give her something from different food groups at each meal, and I like her to try new things. Hey, it works for us! :)

She's into everything; and can climb our 14 steps in under 2 mintues...all by herself. She also really likes to open the bathroom drawers and cabinets. Her favorite thing to do (anywhere in the house) is pull everything out of things (such as laundry baskets, purses, cabinets) Sometimes, she'll put some of it back in! :)

She says "mama, dada, bye-bye, baaah, moo, vrooom, and something that sounds like, "oh, wow!"

She shakes her head "no" when she doesn't want something. (like milk!)

She points with her little pointer finger at everything! She dances anytime she hears music and she is infatuated with books. And she wants you to read them over and over and over and over!!

She can sign "more, please, and all done." She loves to do "so big" and waves "hi" and "bye-bye" to everyone and everything she sees. But don't even think about taking her away from mom and dad...she gets upset!

Here are some pictures of our little one year old from our trip to Alabama. Check back for pics from her birthday party!

**I just realized she looks kind of sad in these pictures...she really is a happy girl!**

Emma is not a fan of milk either, so my dr. recommended doing an ounce of milk and five ounces of formula. So far so good...but we've only been doing it for a day. :) He said alter the ratio every week. We'll see! Love Lauren's new car, by the way!
